The Indian government has introduced a beneficial solution for eliminating old and unfit vehicles. This solution is mutually advantageous: the owner receives a substantial discount on the showroom price of their next new car, while the government can address the issue of increasing carbon emissions.
Guidelines for Scrapping Your Old Car in India:
A letter from the car owner informing the concerned RTO about the scrapping of the vehicle.
An affidavit stating that the vehicle is not under any insurance claim, bank loan, pending traffic challans, or court cases.
Original documents of the vehicle must be surrendered, and the VIN plate must be cut out after the vehicle is scrapped.
A confirmation document with the complete address of the scrap yard and pictures of the scrapped vehicle must be submitted to the RTO.
As the festive season approaches, car companies like Honda and Volkswagen are offering attractive discounts of 1.5% to 3% on their vehicles in exchange for a scrappage certificate from an old vehicle. The offer is valid for 2 years on commercial vehicles and 1 year on passenger vehicles. Cars scrapped in the last 6 months will receive a discount of 1.5% on the showroom price or ₹20,000, whichever is lower.
This initiative from the government will not only help reduce pollution but also enhance road, passenger, and vehicular safety. Additionally, it is expected to create more employment opportunities in the automotive industry.
